Gold dredge 81/8/2023 ![]() Native Alaskan guides explain how the wolf, fox, martin and beaver were used to provide food and protection in the harsh Arctic climate. Guests are taken on a guided walking tour where they are immersed in frontier living. Visitors are then led to where the Chena and Tanana Rivers intersect, the Chena Athabascan Indian Village. Native Alaskan guides teach visitors about their culture and history at the Chena Athabascan Indian Village. Passengers are given a presentation where they learn about kennel life and the challenges that go into making a champion dogsled team, including a spectacular dog mushing demonstration. The boat also visits the Trailbreaker Kennels along the Chena River. Along your journey through the river, you’ll see a plane take off and land right next to the boat. The tour has been in operation since 1950 and provides visitors with a little slice of Alaskan life, history, and culture through narration and various speakers such as an Alaskan bush pilot who explains the vital role planes play in remote Alaska. Gold Dredge 8 tours run twice-daily from early May to mid-September. Gold panning turned out to be more fun than I had expected. I learned some interesting things about the pipeline and gold mining, although some of the engineering details were lost on me. On such a hot day, the morning tour might be a better option. There is little shade at the entrance area where we waited for the tour to start and where we learned about the pipeline, although there were umbrellas available. I took the afternoon tour on a very hot day. I’m not sure what I will wind up doing with it. I just brought mine home inside the film container provided at the Dredge. We could purchase jewelry or magnets with insets for our gold dust. Mine amounted to about $11 at current gold prices. Aboveground sections follow a zig zag configuration to allow for expansion and contraction due to temperature changes and for movement during earthquakes.Įveryone wound up with a few specs of gold dust. In areas of unstable soils, the pipeline was insulated and elevated. Soil sampling done along the route during construction determined whether the section of pipeline in that area would be built above ground or underground in a more conventional manner. It crosses 3 mountain ranges and 34 major rivers. The pipeline runs for 800 miles of rugged and remote terrain. The Alaska pipeline was built between March 1975 and May 1977 to transport oil from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, the northernmost ice-free port in North America. The Gold Dredge 8 experience began in a field under a portion of the Alaska pipeline running above ground.
