The articles collected for this work throw a pronounced spotlight on the requirements and consequences of this tension-filled process into the 19th century. In the mask, so the thesis of this book argues, the arts come to know themselves. Even those like Michel de Montaigne and the moralists of the 17th century, who abstained from courtly life, used the mask to formulate criticisms of the age of bourgeois enlightenment on a broad basis. This was true not only in the aristocratic courts but the art of the mask and disguise reached into all other social levels with great effect and became a pivotal element for a critical engagement with the courtly-absolutist society. Literature, theater, music, and the pictorial arts reflected the mode of feint or as if, which was acted out playfully, and at the same time powerfully, in the mask and therein acknowledged the power of its art and, in the moral sense, as the instrument for disguise, deceit, and lies. In the beginning of the 16th century a theory of uomo universlae (the universal man) was formulated and an aesthetic of the (beautiful) appearance was implemented in political and social practices, which, is visible in the social reality through the wide-ranging culture of the mask, masquerade, and pretense.
